Situated in the heart of the Rhodope Mountains at an altitude of 1,200 m, Momchilovtsi is a picturesque village 240 km from Sofia, 100 km from Plovdiv and 150 km from Smolyan. The surrounding area boasts a favourable geographic location and sufficient natural factors to make it a popular holiday resort: there is good transport access, mountain climate with marked Mediterranean influence, clear steams abounding in Balkan trout, wealth of wild fruit, herbs and mushrooms, rich and varied fauna, protected natural phenomena and wildlife reserves. The population's main means of livelihood (about 2,000 inhabitants) is potato growing and animal husbandry: cows, sheep and pigs. The home-made production of ecological food according to old technologies is particularly interesting - yoghurt, feta and cottage cheese, butter, honey, jams, sausages, etc. Both food tasting sessions and culinary courses in which you can learn how to prepare local specialties are organized. The preserved original folklore, customs and crafts offer the unique chance to acquire basic skills in wood-carving, weaving typical Rhodope fabrics and rugs, Bulgarian embroidery, folk dances, playing the Rhodope bagpipe, etc. You can also take part in the preparation and staging of traditional folk fairs and celebrations of Christmas, New Year's Eve, Easter, St. George's Day, etc. The nearby vicinity offers excellent conditions for outings, hiking tours, half-day and one-day excursions to interesting natural and man-made landmarks, cave exploration, photo-safaris, fishing and various other outdoor recreational activities such as heliotherapy, jogging, etc. In addition, the region is a paradise for hunters. Bulgaria's largest hunting ground - Kormisosh - is located 15 km from Momchilovtsi.
