Georgi Asparuhov (Gundy) was born on May 4, 1943, and died in a car crash on June 30, 1971. The Bulgarian footballer was a center forward for FC "Levski" Sofia during 1960-1961, and 1964-1971, and for FC "Botev" Plovdiv during 1961-1963.
He had 245 games and 150 goals in the master's group. He was a top scorer in the 1965 Championship with 27 goals. He was a three time country champion in 1965, 1968, 1970, as a winner of the cup of sportsmanship. He was declared for footballer No1 and sportsman No1 for Bulgaria. Honored master of sports awarded with the Silver Labor medal. He was a national competitor with 50 participations and 19 goals. He had taken part in three world championships in Chile, England and Mexico. He was in eighth place in the classification of the French football weekly "France football" for a best European footballer and a winner of the "Golden globe" in 1965. This was an extreme success for a sportsman from Eastern Europe during that time. Nereo Roko, the trainer of "Milan," after watching Georgi Asparuchov play exclaimed: "This is the center forward of my dreams." Gundy is the first Bulgarian sportsman, who became widely famous abroad and achieved very high appreciation from famous football specialists.
Undoubted favorite of the football fans, he was reputed for one of the best Bulgarian football player of all times. |
