The mayor of Bulgarian city of Burgas Dimitar Nikolov has spoken out against Turkish possible plans to build a NPP nearby the Bulgarian border on the Black Sea.
Turkey is currently researching the appropriate site to build its first NPP, with the third best site currently considered being nearby the town of Igneada, some 5 km of the Bulgarian border and the village of Rezovo on the Black Sea.
"We will be seaking all diplomatic means possible to dissuade our neighbors from building the NPP near our border," said Nikolov Saturday.
He admitted that the issue is very delicate and that in terms of seismic and other security concerns Turkey has good grounds to erect the NPP near Igneada.
Nikolov nevertheless was firm that he will pursue the policy of opposing the plans, citing concerns among the inhabitants of Burgas Region about their health, as well as about the possible negative effects on tourism, a main source of income for the region.
