Varna Free University "Chernorizets Hrabar" was established in 1991. With a resolution of the 37th National Assembly from July 21, 1995 the University was given the status of a higher educational institution. It provides full-time regular and part-time extramural forms of education for all the educational-qualification degrees stipulated by the Higher Education. At present there are 10 000 students studying at the University in 35 different majors including: Business Administration, Social Work, Economics, International Economic Relations, Public Administration, Political Science, International Relations, Company Security Management, Construction of Buildings and Installations, Fashion, Textile, Journalism, European Studies, etc. Among the major priorities in the educational process are computer studies and foreign language teaching. VFU is the first private university, which was given institutional accreditation for a period of 5 years. Founded only ten years ago, the university has been establishing itself more and more as an academic center combining education of Bulgarian and foreign students in fields of priority interest for the country as well as it has been creating scientific and academic product noted for its international convertibility and high competitiveness.
Varna Free University has successfully passed the certification audit of its Quality Management System and has received an appropriate certificate for compliance with the world standard ISO 9001:1994. The youngest university in Bulgaria's largest seaport is a respectable and welcomed partner of academic structures in Europe, the USA and Asia. Established academic traditions are the active contacts and academic exchange with foreign universities and academic communities. VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" is one of the initiators and most active members of the Black Sea University Network. Lecturers and students from our university have been participating with growing impact in the projects under the programs Tempus, Erasmus, Leonardo and other research and educational programs of the European Union. The University has at its disposal two buildings (both its own property) meeting all contemporary requirements for carrying out the educational process, students' hostel, sports and medical centre, laboratories and art work rooms, its own transportation, computer rooms with access to Internet, a multifarious library with over 36 000 volumes of fiction, scientific and reference books, which is annually supplied with 6000 new items, hundreds of foreign specialized newspapers and magazines. There are also a university publishing house and a bookshop.
In the eve of the 10th anniversary of the University the students were granted yet another highly professional acquisition - the University Media Centre. It consists of the university radio "Academica", which broadcasts programs both for the University and nationwide (on the frequency of Radio Varna) and the university information agency, which works under contracts with the news agencies Reuters, Sinhua and Deutsche Welle. A TV station is about to be set up as well. The scientific-and-research organizations and the business formations with which VFU maintains relations of long-term co-operation provide their facilities for the professional training of the students and the research work of the teaching staff, and above all for participation in national and international public projects in response to the challenges of a globalizing information society.
All this turns VFU "Chernorizets Hrabar" into an integral and intrinsic part of the global educational cyber space of Europe and the rest of the world.
1991 - Established as an independent, democratic educational institution
1995 - On 21 July 1995 VFU was given the status of a higher educational institution with a decision of the 37th National Assembly, published in the State Gazette, issue 68
2001 - On 12 April 2001 VFU became the first non-governmental university to be accredited by the National Agency for Evaluation and Accreditation at the Ministry Council
2001 - VFU was awarded a Certificate of Compliance of the university's system of quality management and administration with the international standard ISO 9001:1994, with the certifying signs of ANSI-RAB (USA), RVA (Netherlands) and UKAS (UK).
2004 - FU was awarded a Certificate of Compliance of the university’s system of quality management and administration with the international standard ISO 9001:2000, with the certifying signs of ANSI-RAB (USA), RVA (Netherlands) and UKAS (UK).
2006 - VFU was granted a second institutional accreditation with the highest grade - ‘Very good' for a period of 6 years which is the maximum period of accreditation according to the Law of Higher Education.
2007 - VFU was awarded a Certificate of Compliance of the university’s system of quality management and administration with the international standard ISO 9001:2000, with the certifying signs of ANAB and UKAS.
