The University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy (UCTM) is located in Sofia, the capital of Republic of Bulgaria. The University was established as a Department of the State Polytechnic in Sofia in 1945. It became an independent higher technological institution named Institute of Chemical Technology in 1953 with two Faculties: Chemical Engineering and Metallurgy with Professor Boris Zagorchev as its first Dean. In 1963 by a Decree of the Council of Ministers it was renamed into Higher Institute of Chemical Technology and in 1995 the National Assembly of the Republic of Bulgaria renamed it to the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy. In 1998 The University was accredited by the National Agency of Evaluation and Accreditation to award Bachelor of Science, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in chemical technologies, biotechnology, chemical engineering, metallurgy, materials science, engineering ecology and environmental protection, automatic and information technologies, industrial management. The University offers a variety of pre-professional programs in addition to the degree programs too. The University has an average enrolment of about 3,000 students with about 80 international students. Today, the University of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy is an institution with more than 50 years history as an educational and scientific center with strong traditions and considerable success in creation of highly qualified engineers.
