Dimitar Berbatov - Famous Bulgarians Information - Invest Bulgaria

Dimitar Berbatov was born on January 30, 1981 in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. He is the caprain of the Bulgarian national team and is undoubtedly the best Bulgarian soccer player at the moment. Now, he plays as a striker for the English Premiership team Tottenham Hotspur. Dimitar Berbatov is one of the beast soccer players in the world; he was nominated by FIFA for the same award in 2007. He has scored 38 goals for the Bulgarian National Team, one goal more than Hristo Stoichkov. He is second in this classification after Hristo Bonev, who has scored 47 goals, but it is only a matter of time for Dimitar Berbatov to become the biggest goal scorer for Bulgaria of all times. He is though the most effective goal scorer of the Bulgarian national team of all times with his 38 goal scored in 60 games - a coefficient of 0.63(3).

Dimitar Berbatov made his first steps in the soccer game in the Blagoevgrad Soccer Academy, which has given Bulgaria many famous soccer players. He was spotted when he was seventeen years old by Dimitar Penev, a legendary name for Bulgarian soccer. Penev recruited Berbatov in CSKA (one of the two best Bulgarian soccer clubs, the other one is Levski). The most interesting fact about Berbatov's first transfer in that CSKA bought him from Pirin Blagoevgrad for a bag of training vests, a couple of soccer balls, and a dozen soccer shoes. Berbatov made quite a progress from being traded for soccer equipment in 1998 to EUR 16 million spent from Tottenham Hotspur for him in 2006. Berbatov made a name in CSKA by scoring 37 goals between 1998 and 2000, 7 of which for European tournaments. This was enough for the Bulgarian to get a transfer at a European grand - namely, Bayer Leverkusen. Berbatov was 19 years old when he signed with the German team for the price of 4.5 mil of the German currency at the time. The next 6 years were couple of years were crucial for Dimitar Berbatov. Playing for a strong Europena club really helped him grow up and on the field. He spent 6 years in Leverkusen and was the leader of the team for the last three years. In the seasons 2003-2004, 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 he scored 19, 26 and 24 goals respectively. His excellent plays for the German club were not left unnoticed and he became a target of many of the biggest soccer clubs in the world. In may 2006, he signed a contract with Tottenham Hotspur for EUR 19 mil which made him the most expensive Bulgarian soccer player of all times (the second most expensive is Valeri Bojinov, EUR 13, Manchester City). In his very first season in premiership Berbatov scored 23 goals, became many people's favorite and definitely Tottenham's best player. In his debut season for Tottenham, Dimitar Berbatov was chosen in FA Premiere League PFA Team of the Season, the one of the three players in the team that were not Manchester United players. He was also voted Fans player of the year for Tottenham in 2006-2007. Other individual achievements for the Bulgarian striker are Bulgarian Fans' Player of the year for 2004, 2005 and 2006 and Bulgarian footballer of the year - 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2005. So far, Dimitar Berbatov has scored 153 goals for the clubs he has played for and 38 goals for the Bulgarian national soccer team. Currently Berbatov is rumored for move to a bigger club on everyday basis. Some people say that these are pure speculation, but most of the people believe that he is going to move to a better team in pursuit of cups and medals, the only thing missing in his career.
