Apriltsi is a picturesque town situated in central north Bulgaria at the foot of the highest peak in the Balkan Mountains – Botev, 2376 m. The town is located 550-600 m above sea level, has a population of around 4000 people, and is proclaimed a reserve of local importance. Except for Botev, there are other peaks Balkan Peaks in close proximity to Apriltsi, namely Triglav and Maragidik. The town is a relatively new tourist destination, but highly popular now. Apriltsi was created by the merging of four villages: Novo Selo, Zla Reka, Vidima and Ostretz; today they are the neighborhoods of the town.
The unique, unmatched beauty of the Balkan Mountain is the main reason for Apriltsi to become a highly popular tourist destination. There are thick forests, water springs, picturesque valleys, big lawns, steep hills, great views and all the conditions needed for mountain tourism. The resort offers pedestrian tourism (there are 8 picturesque pedestrian paths passing through the National Park Central Balkan), horse riding, mountain biking, fishing, alpinism, skiing, swimming, tennis, hunting and picnicking. The reserve has been hot spot for investors as well and is facilitated with all the necessary modern equipment. “Djendema” Reserve is right next to Apriltsi. It is the biggest Balkan Mountain reserve and the second biggest one in Bulgaria. Included in UNESCO’s program “Man and biosphere”, “Djendema” preserves centuries-old beech-trees and fir trees, unique plants and many different animals – wolfs, bears, eagles, deers, etc. The resort also has cultural sights: “St Petka Paraskeva” church, “St Georgi Pobedonosets” temple and the “St Troitsa” girl’s monastery.
