Albena is a popular Black Sea resort; it is located at the northern part of the Bulgarian sea coast, 30 km north from Varna and 12 km from Balchik.
The resort was officially opened on August 24, 1969. Just like Golden Sands, Albena was built on purpose as well. Like the whole Black Sea coast in Bulgaria, it was a very popular investors’ destination over the last 2 decades, more than 350 million lv have been invested in Albena over the last 9 years. Today, the resort offers almost 15,000 beds in 43 hotels and other tourist settlements and more than 100 restaurants. Albena is friendly towards all kinds of tourists; there are different places for all age groups. The resort’s popularity has been growing over the last couple of years due to the diversification of the services the resort offers. Albena is a popular place in Bulgaria for business congresses, balneological tourism has been developed, and excellent sports conditions have been installed in the area. Cultural tourism is also very popular in the region because of the Palace – the residence of the Romanian Queen Maria. The Palace is a botanic garden with more than 2000 plants and cacti which cannot be seen anywhere else in Bulgaria.
There is excellent, modern sport equipment in the resort, offering perfect conditions for 42 different sports; the resort is hosting many sports tournaments. There are 7 soccer fields and a lot of Bulgarian soccer clubs choose Albena for their pre-season training during the winter pause of the Bulgarian Championship. There are also conditions for tennis, grass hockey, horse riding, mini-golf, bowling, and all kinds of water sports: yachting, surfing, waters skiing, jet skiing, scuba-diving, beach volleyball.
Right behind the resort is the Baltata National Reserve. The reserve consists of thick forests which gives particular beauty to Albena.
